Alongside its announcements at Google I/O 2025, Google quietly rolled out a visual update to Google Discover, its personalized content feed. The update introduces a redesigned layout for news cards, with a key focus on highlighting the name and icon of the source website.
Previously, news sources were displayed at the bottom of each card, next to the article title and time of publication. With the new layout, the publisher’s name and icon have been moved to the top of the card, above the featured image, offering greater visibility and brand recognition. The publication time remains at the bottom.
Google Discovery’s Redesign: Old vs New (Image: 9to5Google)
This change, initially observed by 9to5Google, affects both the left-side Discover panel on Android home screens and the Google app on iOS. The redesign provides clearer separation between news cards and improves the overall organization and readability of the feed.
Highlighting the source at the top helps users better identify the origin of content, which is particularly important given ongoing concerns about the reliability and accuracy of Discover’s source filtering. With the new design, users can more easily assess the credibility of the articles at a glance.
The redesign appears to be part of a broader effort to align Discover with Material Design 3, Google’s current design framework introduced in late 2024. Material Design 3 emphasizes clarity, accessibility, and consistency across platforms. Earlier iterations of this transition included rounded corners and other subtle visual enhancements.
Looking ahead, there is speculation that Google may introduce further changes as it rolls out Material 3 Expressive, a more dynamic and expressive visual language introduced during I/O 2025. This update is expected to debut alongside Android 16, and more design adjustments may follow as other Google apps adopt the refreshed style.
The Discover update represents a small but meaningful step toward improving usability, trust, and visual clarity in one of Google’s most widely used content discovery tools.
