  • Ham Steak: They’re typically found in the refrigerated meat section.
  • Maple Syrup: We recommend pure maple syrup for the best flavor. Avoid using pancake syrups as they can get pretty sweet. As it cooks, the syrup caramelizes slightly, adding a subtle brûlée-like flavor.
  • Stone Ground Mustard: If unavailable, Dijon mustard is a suitable substitute in the same amount.
  • Butter: Both salted and unsalted butter work.

Choosing A Ham Steak

Ham steak is a thick slice of ham sold in individual slices. Like other hams, they are almost always sold pre-cooked and cured.

Thickness Matters: A thicker ham steak (about ½ to 1 inch) is ideal as it cooks evenly and stays juicier, but that’s not always possible. Thinly sliced ham steaks can dry out quickly, so just keep an eye on the cooking time if you use them.

Bone-In vs. Boneless: Bone-in ham steaks often have more flavor but may take a little more effort to eat and cut around the bone. Boneless options are more convenient and slice easily, making them ideal for quick meals.

Salt Content: Ham steaks can be quite salty. If you’re watching your sodium intake, look for reduced-sodium options or rinse the steak briefly under cold water and pat it dry before cooking.

Alternate Cooking Methods

While we use the skillet method for this recipe, you can also grill or air fry the ham steak. To grill, use the same method, cooking on medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes per side.

For air frying, set the temperature to 400°F and cook for 3 minutes on one side. Flip the ham, slather on the sauce, and air fry for another 3 minutes.

Storage & Reheating Instructions

Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for 4-5 days.

Reheat portions in a skillet, searing on each side for 1-2 minutes until heated through.
