David Lynch Honored with Free Documentary, Family Meditation

Earlier this week, the entertainment community was thrown into shock by the surprise passing of David Lynch. As fans and collaborators of the Twin Peaks creator remember him, his family and the Criterion Channel want to help with that in their own individual ways.

For Criterion, this means making the David Lynch: The Life documentary free to stream in the US, with or without a subscription, through January 31. Released in 2016, The Life covers the late filmmaker’s life up to that point, from his childhood and time as an art school painter to beginning production on his 1977 debut film, Eraserhead. If you’ve got a Criterion sub, that documentary doesn’t have to be the end of it: the service also features several Lynch films in its catalog like Eraserhead, Inland Empire, and Lost Highway, in addition to related documentaries, on-set footage, and “hours of interviews with the man himself and his key collaborators.” You can see Criterion’s Lynch playlist here.

Additionally, David Lynch’s children—Jennifer, Austin, Riley, and Luna—have invited fans to join them on a 10-minute worldwide group meditation at 12 PM PT on tomorrow, January 20.  That would’ve marked his 79th birthday, and the four children hope this serves as a “celebration of his life. David was a guiding light of creativity, love, and peace. […] Let us come together, wherever we are, to honor his legacy by spreading peace and love across the world. Please take this time to meditate, reflect, and send positivity into the universe.”

If you happen to live in LA, there’s another way to remember David Lynch: visiting Bob’s Big Boy, the diner where he’d reportedly have lunch every day at 2:30 PM for seven years straight. It was there where he took a photo with director John Waters, did a “chemistry lunch” for future Peaks stars Laura Dern and Kyle MacLachlan, and he’d be there, jotting down several ideas on the diner’s napkins. Since news of his passing, the sole Burbank location has picked up plenty of visitors, and its five-foot Big Boy statue is currently an altar filled with messages and pictures from those who connected with his work.

So if you still need a way to remember or become entrenched in David Lynch’s art and life, you’ve got some ways to do it, whether you’re at home or in California.
